St Thomas Orthodox Maha Edavaka Sunday School, Bangalore East

Christian Education and Nurturing is based on the Life and Mission of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Greatest Teacher. Following the Jewish model, the Orthodox Church upholds that nurturing starts at home and continues in the Church in connection with faith and liturgical worship of the Church. This is the model we are continuing till date, but it was non-formal till the 18th century AD. The “Koonen Kurish Sathyam” (The Bend Cross Oath at Mattancherry, Kochi) in 1653 was a landmark in the history of Malankara Orthodox Church, which paved the way for added emphasis on systematic learning of the Scriptures, Faith, Worship, Liturgy and Spiritual observances of the Church. During the period 1765-1808, sacraments and prayers were also included in the study topics, which helped as a pointer towards the formal Sunday School formation in the Church.

Orthodox Syrian Sunday School Association of the East (OSSAE)

Sunday School Samajam was established in 1931 with the appointment of late lamented Puthencavu Geevarghese Mar Philexinos Metropolitan as its President and Rev. Fr. K. David as the General Secretary. On 15 October 1964 it was rejuvenated to receive its present form as Orthodox Syrian Sunday School Association of the East (OSSAE) with HH Catholicos as Patron, a Metropolitan as President, a priest as Director-General and later a Director for OVBS. All Sunday School units in the Orthodox Parishes throughout the world are functioning with a common syllabus and text book under the guidelines of OSSAE.

OSSAE – Outside Kerala Region (OSSAE-OKR)

OSSAE-OKR is working as an autonomous body under OSSAE with a Metropolitan as President, a Director, and OVBS-OKR Director to cater to the specific requirements of outside Kerala region, which comprises seven Dioceses of the Malankara Orthodox Church, headquartered at St Thomas Orthodox Theological Seminary (STOTS), Nagpur. Diocesan level activities are led by the Diocesan Metropolitan, as President, and a priest as Vice-President and the Diocesan Director. Diocese Districts are giving specific guidelines for district level activities, which are carried out by Parish Sunday Schools. There are three Districts in Bangalore Diocese: Bangalore I, Bangalore II, and Hyderabad.

St Thomas Orthodox Maha Edavaka (STOME) Sunday School

Our Church was consecrated on 19 December 1982. Much before this, SS education was imparted in Bangalore East from the 1960s with the leadership and initiative of Rev Fr Abraham Maret and late Mr M.S. Zachariah, who served as the first headmaster of the Sunday School. STOME Sunday School comes in Bangalore District II of the Bangalore Diocese with 120 students and 20 teachers this year in Baby Class (Jesus Kids) and Classes 1-12.

Activities

Sunday School activities are held on a regular basis every Sunday after the Holy Qurbana from 11:15 am to 12:30 pm. Classes are preceded with an Assembly session at the SS Hall (Fr Dr V.C. Samuel Hall) followed by an interactive session which includes Spiritual hymns, brief talk on the significance of respective Sundays, Bible studies, quiz, birthday songs and prayer. We have a dedicated and qualified group of teachers who are committed to teaching the Word of God. OVBS is conducted every year during the Dussehra vacation.

Our Sunday School follows the curriculum prescribed by OSSAE-OKR and exams are conducted every year as per schedule. Sunday School Day is observed every year with the Junior Church choir, Old Testament readings and Biblical message during Holy Qurbana by children.

The Sunday School also provides a platform for nourishing the budding talents of children by conducting various events such as Singing (both Solo and Group), Elocution, Essay Writing, Drawing, Memory Verses, Bible Quiz, and skit. The sincere efforts of the teachers in teaching and guiding the children are commendable.
